Our Commitment To Responsible Forestry
Hickman Lumber Company believes that a responsible stewardship ethic in the planning, management, and use of the forest’s resources today will preserve our forests and ensure their continued benefits and values are here tomorrow. This stewardship requires committing land to forest, using proper silviculture in a holistic approach to timber management, aesthetics, wildlife management, and society.
Hickman Lumber Company will continue to use single tree and group selection to harvest. These silviculture systems maintain the aesthetics of the property and maintain shade intolerant species in the stands. They also produce multistoried stands and maintain diversity, providing food, cover, and habitat for many species of wildlife. Clearcutting will be used to salvage dead and dying trees and maintain brush stage habitat on the property. All species will be maintained in the stand to provide multiple benefits for society and the forest community. Hickman Lumber maintains and inspects annually permanent growth plots to determine growth rates for the forestland they manage, and exclosures to study the effects of harvesting on regeneration and other plant species. Unique and cultural (iron furnaces) and physical (vistas etc.) features will be protected by restricting harvesting in the vicinity.
Threatened and endangered species will be protected by harvest timing, habitat protection, and the reduction of erosion and sedimentation.
Responsible forestry isn't something new to Hickman Lumber. We've been managing our own lands in a responsible manner for over fifty years. FSC Certification now allows us to promote responsible forestry to our customers and other forest land owners. Hickman Lumber is now proud to offer our FSC certification as positive proof that the wood you buy comes from a well managed forest.
What is FSC forest certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organization that accredits third-party certifiers such as the Rainforest Alliance. Forest management operations that meet the FSC principles and criteria for environmental, economic, and social standards are awarded the FSC certification seal as well as the third-party certification seal. Operations that purchase and sell FSC-certified products can achieve certification when they meet Chain-of-Custody standards.
